Paestum
Discover Poseidonia with Discover South, the ancient city founded in the 7th century. B.C. by Greek colonists and then conquered by Rome in 273 BC. when the city changed its name to Paestum and its splendor continued until the area began to become swampy until its inhabitants decided to abandon the area in the 9th century. A.D.
A walk that allows you to breathe in almost 3,000 years of history by walking along the Via Sacra, brought to light at the beginning of the 20th century: on both sides there were public areas or areas intended for worship as well as the residential areas of the city center and the paved Roman traces the ancient Greek route.
You will also be able to observe the area of the Forum, laid out in Roman times, rectangular and flanked by other public and religious buildings and the so-called "Italic Temple",
The sacred area with the three Doric temples of the city, which miraculously came down to us in excellent condition, is among the gems of Paestum with the temple of Hera which is the oldest of the three large buildings and belongs to the first generation of large stone temples : its construction began around 560 BC.
Then we have the temple of Athena, the only one of which the divinity to which it is dedicated is known with certainty, namely Athena, built on the highest point of the city around 500 BC.
Finally, the temple of Neptune, built around the middle of the 5th century BC. the largest ever, made with enormous boulders connected to each other by simple dowels.
Also worth mentioning is the sanctuary of Hera, an ancient place of extramural worship near the mouth of the Sele which is said to have been founded by the Argonauts and the many necropolises found outside the city walls.
