Ischia
Explore the wonders of Ischia Ponte's historic center in a fascinating itinerary that extends to the entrance of the impressive Aragonese Castle. The walk begins at Palazzo Scalfati, passes through the renowned Palazzo Malcovati, also known as "Lo Scuopolo," the set of several film productions set on the island.
The route continues to discover the Church of the Spirit Santo, with its singular history, and then reaches the majestic Aragonese Castle, an ancient fortress that has defended the island over the centuries. Near the entrance to the castle, you'll enjoy a panoramic view of Cartaromana Bay, where the Torre Guevara (or Michelangelo Tower, legend has it that Michelangelo stayed there in 1500) and the charming medieval Church of Sant'Anna stand out.
The bay, enclosed between the lava dome on which the Castle stands and the Sant'Anna rocks, holds in its depths a significant part of the ancient Roman settlement of Ischia, known as Aenaria. This Roman-era urban aggregate, recently discovered six meters below sea level due to the island's complex geological events, reveals its history through its seabed. During the walk, we will make a stop at the "Aenaria Multimedia Center," where the story of the discovery will be told and we will be able to watch a video projection on the reconstruction of the settlement based on archaeologists' studies. The ongoing research work over the years will also be explained.
Explore the wonders of Ischia Ponte's historic center on a 90-minute itinerary that will guide you from the impressive Palazzo Scalfati to the majestic Aragonese Castle, passing by Palazzo Malcovati and the Church of the Spirito Santo.
